Three Rapid Weight Loss Diets


The Military Diet

This rapid weight loss diet is actually another version of the 3-Day Diet, but by a different name.  It’s probably the fastest weight loss method I know of.  So, if you’re in a real pinch to lose up to 10 pounds in a week, or maybe even 3 days, as some sources claim, this is as good as it gets, next to total starvation (which I’m not sure would be any better).  At least on this diet, you can eat – you just can’t eat very much! 

If you want to continue the Military Diet on the other four days, follow a 1500 calorie plan. The Military Diet is a low-calorie, portion-controlled plan for rapid weight loss.   

Day 1 

  • Breakfast
  • 1 cup coffee or plain tea
  • 1 slice toast with 2 tablespoons of peanut butter
  • ½ grapefruit
  • Lunch
  • 1 cup coffee or tea
  • 1 slice bread or toast
  • ½ cup tuna
  • Dinner
  • 3 oz any meat
  • 1 cup green beans
  • 1 small apple
  • ½ banana
  • 1 cup vanilla ice cream 

Day 2 

  • Breakfast
  • 1 slice bread or toast
  • 1 egg, cooked any way you like
  • ½ banana 
  • Lunch
  • 1 cup cottage cheese
  • 1 hardboiled egg
  • 5 saltine crackers 
  • Dinner
  • 2 hot dogs (no bun)
  • ½ cup carrots
  • 1 cup broccoli
  • ½ banana
  • ½ cup vanilla ice cream 

Day 3 

  • Breakfast
  • 1 slice cheese
  • 1 small apple
  • 5 saltine apples 
  • Lunch
  • 1 slice bread or toast
  • 1 egg, cooked any way you like 
  • Dinner
  • 1 cup tuna
  • ½ banana
  • 1 cup vanilla ice cream 

Tip:  drink lots of water while on this diet

The FAST Diet

Starve yourself two days a week?  How’s that sound?  Actually, it's intermittent fasting.  If it means rapid weight loss that is quicker than most other diets, are you willing to try it?  Here, you basically ‘fast’ for two days out of seven, meaning you consume about 500 calories for women and 600 calories for men - during each of those two days, then eat normally the other five days.  

The FAST Diet was written by Dr. Michael Mosley and Mimi Spencer of the U.K., who claim you can lose weight by following this diet much quicker than other ‘standard’ diets.  Their book, by the same name, provides sample menus containing 500-600 calories.   

Interestingly, the intermittent fasting component of The FAST Diet, boasts healthful benefits.  The authors claim that a scientific study actually found that  "intermittent fasting improves learning and memory by stimulating new brain cells in the region of the brain responsible for memory."  

It appears to be worth investigating - lose a few pounds quickly and reap the health benefits - at the same time!

Grapefruit Diet    

This one has been around for ages!  Seems the diet is based on the postulate that grapefruit contains some magical, chemically-potent enzyme that, when combined with protein, actually burns fat.   The Grapefruit Diet is still a time-honored crash diet that will help you shed a few pounds – quickly.  Most versions claim a loss of up to 10 pounds during this 12 day, 800 calorie diet.   

Make sure you drink plenty of water while on this diet.  Black coffee and plain tea are allowed, too.  Meats and eggs can be prepared any way you like (even fried) and butter is allowed.  Salad dressing, in any amount, is also permitted. 

  • Breakfast
  • 2 eggs, 2 slices bacon, black coffee, ½ grapefruit or glass of grapefruit juice 
  • Lunch
  • Salad with salad dressing, unlimited meat and ½ grapefruit or glass of grapefruit juice 
  • Dinner
  • Red or green vegetable (avoid starchy ones like peas, corns, sweet potatoes)
  • Unlimited fish or meat
  • ½ grapefruit or glass of grapefruit juice
  •  Bedtime Snack
  • Glass of skimmed milk

Years ago, I used a similar method to The FAST Diet; it actually worked well, for a while.  Basically, I dieted all week and then took one whole day to eat whatever I wanted.  It helped sooth that ‘deprived’ feeling and also helped me look forward to a one-day-splurge every week!

I can personally attest that the Grapefruit Diet does work! Many years ago, it was one of the many crash-diets-of-choice that I repeatedly used to lose weight.  It worked every time – I always lost a few pounds quickly.  However, my mistake was that I misused the diet in an effort to permanently lose a significant amount of weight – which DID NOT WORK! 

The only long-term result is that, to this day, I refuse to eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice - in any form whatsoever!
