Secrets of
Processed Foods

What are the secrets of processed foods?

Why do we find certain foods irresistible?  For most of us, the foods we love and crave most are those that are convenient, pre-prepared, and often come in their own wrapper!

Food processors cleverly ‘hook us’ and disguise their secrets.  And, their secrets are contributing to the obesity pandemic.  But how?

Watch this short video for an authoritative and enlightening look at the business of food.

Food

An Abundance of Processed FoodAn Abundance of Processed Foods

Along the way, feeding a nation became an industry, and a profitable industry, at that!!

Following the agricultural era, the industrial revolution resulted in an industry in which food is something more than just ‘fuel for the body.’  Rather, food has become a product.

Food processors are making billions by creating ‘products’ that tempt us, thrill us, and appeal to the majority of our senses.

Ultra-processed foods, those that are highly processed and devoid of nutrients, are the major culprit because they contain the densest concentration of calories.  This concentration of calories, coupled by an increasingly sedentary society, is feeding (no pun intended) the obesity pandemic!

According to pediatric endocrinologist and health expert David Ludwig, Sometime in the past century, though, our business priorities began to run askew, implies Ludwig. Primarily fueled by short-term economic interests, we began to literally tip the scales of food production technology with mass produced goods made of concentrated sugar and refined flour. In the same light, we also began to start using toxic chemicals to grow our crops and cut dangerous corners in the way we raise livestock, such as standard use of antibiotics, artificial hormones, and feed additives which would make no one would want to admit “I am what I eat.”

We already know that processed foods are

  • cheap
  • convenient
  • tasty

But, did you know that food processors employ food scientists to create the sensation of ‘mouth feel.’  Mouth feel deals with the sensation of a food’s texture.  Much like ‘Bliss Point’ in which food scientists seek to maximize a food’s flavor.

Secrets of processed foods also deals with the ability to actually bypass your brain’s satiety control center.  That explains why we can eat and eat and never feel full!

So, how are processed foods contributing to the obesity pandemic?

  1. Appeal
  2. Food density
  3. Addiction

Food scientists and technologists use chemistry and other sciences to study the underlying principles of food. They analyze nutritional content of food, discover new food sources, and research ways to make processed foods safe and healthy.Agricultural and Food Scientists - Bureau of Labor Statisticswww.bls.gov/...science/agricultural-and-food...U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics
